Bee Craft Timely Reminder – 14th February 2018

Bees are still in their clusters due to the cold with no sign of a spring thaw. If you intend to treat for varroa, it can still be done on a dry, calm sunny day when you should note where in the hive the cluster is located.

Check against the potential location of stores from your notes on hefting last week. Do the stores seem to be close to the cluster or the opposite side of the hive? Clusters can sometimes become isolated from stores on the next frame.

If in any doubt feed fondant directly above them which they can take if needed using an inner hive cover with feeding hole and eke. Be prepared with everything you need so that the roof can be replaced as quickly as possible. Afterwards keep accurate records of treatments used when, what as these must be kept for at least 5 years.
