Check the weight of your hives

From now on, until the spring is well under way and the bees flying regularly, you need to periodically check the weight of your hives so that you can gauge whether the colonies are getting low on stores. They will already be increasing the amount of brood and will therefore need honey to generate warmth. If you think a colony may be short of stores you can feed with fondant. You may see bees out foraging on warmer days, but they will be collecting pollen to feed the brood as the queen starts to lay more. It is unlikely that they will be able to find nectar so honey stores are vital. If the colony is light you need to feed fondant to replicate the honey stores.
