FM Business 14 January 2013 Crisis threatens honey bees.

A crisis is threatening the world’s honey bees, throwing up yet another hurdle in the quest for global food security. The British Beekeepers’ Association, the UK’s leading organisation representing beekeepers, says “one in three mouthfuls of the food we eat is dependent on pollination” by bees. The warning came as the association reported a 72% drop in honey production last year over 2011. It said an average of just 3,6kg/hive of honey was produced last year compared to a yearly average of 13,6kg/hive. It is the UK’s worst honey yield since records have been kept.
