Timely Reminder – 20th January 2016

Picture: Bees on the move. Pauline Aslin

The advice regarding re-location of hives is normally that they can be moved less than 3 feet or more than 3 miles. Anything in between risks foraging bees returning to the old site and being lost to the colony. However, at this time of year that rule can be disregarded: the bees have not been out foraging and have only been making a few cleansing flights close to the hive. If you need to relocate your hive, this is the time to do it. Close off the entrance while you move the hive, you can open it up again once it is in its new location.
