As a general rule, the Vespula species, ie, Common, German and Red Wasps nest underground or in dark cavities; Vespa crabro European Hornets prefer nesting in hollow trees whilst the Dolichovespula species, ie, Tree, Norwegian and Median Wasps, nest in trees and bushes with nests hanging from branches. Sometimes wasps will set up home in empty beehives, particularly where wax moths have destroyed the combs of a dead colony.
