IN THE LATE afternoon of 30 October 1851, while walking home from his apiary on the west side of Philadelphia, Revd Lorenzo Lorraine Langstroth had a life-changing vision of such great significance that the world of beekeeping was radically changed forever. The movable frame hive, which this vision ultimately made possible, would eventually change honey bee management, honey production and the wholesale movement of colonies from a mere, mostly unsuccessful curiosity for a few, to an efficient, safe and profitable means of livelihood for thousands.
