Continue to monitor Varroa levels

By Pauline Aslin

The warm start to the winter this year has meant that in many parts of the UK colonies still had brood on more than one frame right through December. This in turn means that the Varroa mite has been able to continue breeding. If you have mesh floors, do check the trays for fallen mites every now and then: Clean the tray and re-insert it. Wait for 3-5 days then take out the tray and count the number of mites that have fallen. Divide that number by the number of days the tray was in for, and you have your daily mite drop.

Enter this into the Varroa calculator on BeeBase to check how soon treatment is necessary.
